Methotrexate: opinions

#1

Does anyone use methotrexate just for their Sjogrens symptoms?

If so, would you share a comment on the experience you have had with methotrexate; & the length of time on the medication, benefits noted, and side effects. It can be brief or as detailed as you desire to describe your experience. Thank you.

Oh! By the way: did your insurance cover the medication?

I used it for six months for psoriatic arthritis. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Did you already try plaquenil?

I take Plaquenil x2 200mg daily, my rheumatologist mentioned we might need to consider methotrexate & we will talk about it at my next appointment.

Thanks for the comment.

I used plaquenil for some time on its own, then added in MTX before changing over to leflunomide. I didn’t drop plaquenil until I had been on a biologic for about six months.

I would have stayed on MTX if it worked for me, but it didn’t. The topic of adding it in has come up again recently. If I did go back to it, I would do the injectable form as it tends to be easier on the belly. People are typically started at a low dose in order to get accustomed to it. I seem to remember starting at 10mg a week.

Thank you Stoney.

I have concerns, but that's the apprehension with any meds.

I was going to ask about injections versus oral, but forgot to add it into the starting of the discussion.

I just started the MTX recently in addition to my other medications-

I know some work better for some of us as opposed to others... but, i'm having several side effects- I'm going to try to stick with it for a little while before I rush to judgement on this medication.

We shall see where it goes....

Some of the side effects can be dealt with by making sure that you are well hydrated, and also taking folic acid.

I am - to the best I can.

Thank you.

Tried methotrexate and my liver enzymes went too high, even with the folic acid. It did help with the nerve pain, but it also wreaked havoc on my hair. Stopped it on MD recs. I’m now trying a holistic approach. Have an all natural MTV, plus all natural turmeric with a bunch of antioxidants.
Now off the Imuran and just taking the plaquenil.

Thank you Trudie. Could you please fill me in on the all natural meds you take? Very interested. Trying a combo of both approaches to find my best plan.
